Discuss the difference between learning and acquisition discussed in the reading. Has this been true to your experience? Explain.


In the reading, I learned that learning reading and learning writing are both the traditional methods to get the knowledge and acquire the skills. Instructors just need to help students learn the words and the keys to analyze each parts of the sentences or reading materials so that children will be capable of analyzing the reading skillfully and writing formally. Standing in contrast, the researchers, who put forward the acquisition reading and writing, think the teachers should create an environment that student will understand the words or articles in all the aspects but not only the meaning of these materials through reading enough books, acquiring plenty of background information and feeling the process of expressing themselves in their writing.

Let's start from the reading methods. Students using learning reading ways will know the every precise meaning of the words and the grammar and structure of the sentences very well. Instructors will let their students to read the words loudly to ensure that the students understand the every words of the articles. From their perspective, if the students memorize the meaning of the words correctly, they will also understand the whole articles of course. On the contrary, the researchers supporting the acquisition reading methods think learners should read pile materials so that they will know the context comprehensively. The process of understanding the words by conjecture from the background is important because they will know where the words can be used suitably, which preposition should be used, so and so.

In the same way, the learning writing is to teach the unfixable forms and expressing skills of writing the articles. However, the acquisition writing is the excellent means which provides the students cues and condition to express themselves creatively on their own.

In this reading material, we also learn about several assumptions or viewpoints about these two methods, the difference between learning the first language and learning the second language and the debate over whether the kids can study the second language better than adults. One scholar proposed that adults can study the second language slowly and always have the accent forever because of three factors mainly. One scholar thought that the job of teachers should to best way to make the input comprehensible so that the output will be comprehensible as well. The list will be going on.

From my perspective, both of these two methods exist actually. In the most of classrooms, including my classrooms in china, teachers prefer use the traditional method (learning method) to teach the reading and writing because they think this way is secure, convenient and mainstream. We the different forms of different styles of writing directly but not through reading enough materials. Machinelike! For example, teachers will empty enough time for student to recite the idioms and to tell the usage of every words. So horrible! However, when I come here, I feel something changed really. The professors will not use the textbooks during the classes but rather recommend students to reading a large number of textbooks and course materials before the class so that the students can achieve the cues and practice opportunities during curriculums. I think this way can be called acquisition method and I really like it. From reading materials before classes, I have my own thoughts already and arise several questions which I need cues. So the curriculum will be more helpful and effective for me because I will focus on dealing with the problems I met. I will insist on this method forever.
