Chengxi(Albert) Wu Homework#4

Clearly, this Rutgers’ student Amanda did cheat on his graduate paper. Even thought there are some defects in Turnitin and she did not plagiarize as much as 53%, the plagiarism behavior can’t be denied.

Nevertheless, another question exists in Amanda’s case, which is she indeed use quotation and reference correctly on her paper. I believe that quotation and reference do not equal to her own idea, to be specific, if she only use other people’s words as a support to her self-create opinion and argument then everything is fine, but, she seems do have any opinion in her paper and so called “her opinion” actually comes from the quotations and reference.

Besides, her professor also proved that here i quote “he found three passages that were lifted word-for-word from a gay rights website, a Yale University student’s blog and an online journal about gay politics”. As a result there is no doubt that a “F” is not overmuch for Amanda’s paper.

Unfortunately, things don’t end at here. Now the news about her plagiarism are spread into whole internet, which do cause many troubles to her average life and career. Personally speaking, this situation, that you can get anything about a person online, is a unignorable issue in the modern society and i don’t appreciate that. In this case, even though Amanda plagiarize, but she has privacy right to keep media and other people out of her personal life(like the hagging picture) and she can’t be called “stupid and silly”. I think what we should learn from Amanda’s story is not only be academic honesty, but also protect ourself carefully in this digital ear in case our rights be upheld.
