Write about a literacy learning experience you have.
My personal literacy study began at elementary school. In China, children are truly educated when they are about 6 years old and this period of study keeping for 6 years.
The basic literacy goal of Chinese elementary education is to let young students recognize Chinese characters, vocabulary and manage fundamental writings skills. By the way, the school also teach us a little bit of English-- alphabet, around 500 simple English words, and how to write simple sentence.
There are about 2500 to 3500 most-used characters that we have to understand how to pronounce, write and use, and only after that we can be defined as have literacy. (different from English, words are combined by single characters in Chinese, so we don’t have to remember a amount of them). After 2 years of remembering characters, most of us at 8 finally obtained the ability to study how to compose words and sentences, which evolved into writing essays 1 year later. On the last 2 years in my elementary school, according to my remember, the frequency of writing a essay, which was the one of most horrible thing at that time, is 3 or 2 days. Teachers instructed us to use complex characters and variable words produce essays with correct grammar. The topics of them are always same and un-innovative -- we wrote travel notes to express the beauty of great landscape, even we have never been to the places we described. We wrote reaction to a book or article which we sometime don’t understand. Nevertheless, our elementary school graduation decreased illiteracy rate.
The next education process is junior high school. Chinese educators design courses to introduce literature instead of literacy anymore. By reading famous novels and articles, at that 3 years, most Chinese junior students’ linguistic level up to a new stage and some of them can even write extremely beautiful articles on the third year. As for my skill, it only reached the average line. The English education now is a unignorable part only after Chinese and Math. We learned total 2500 vocabularies, grammar rules, basic reading and writing skills but no spoken English and I am pretty sure our English literacy is as same as that of a 8-year-old child.
After graduated from Junior high school, unlike other students, i placed my academic life in a international school which aim on study aboard. Actually, that means the end of my Chinese literacy/literature study since at that time TOEFL,SAT and AP are my whole life. That’s my literacy experience
