homework 2

In this day and age, with the advancement of digital literacy, people establish increasingly new literate manners in daily life. The definition of literacy here is not just about reading and recognising words; moreover, it includes many aspects, such as drawing, body gestures, videos, musics and so on. The following example indicates my own literacy experience.

As it says, “In our own age new digital technologies have affected a communication revolution”, indeed, literacy plays an essential role in assisting me to understand the class. It is appropriate to say that learning chemistry through reading is sometimes too abstract for students to acquire the information, though they recognise all those words. For instance, when previewing the textbook, I found it quite difficult for me to understand the theoretical essays of DNA without any pictures. I was entangled in a number of questions: How does the process form? What is the shape of DNA? What is the association and difference of DNA and RNA? I was so befuddled and went to class with plenty of questions. During the class, our chemistry teacher discovered these problems as well. Therefore, to help us comprehend precisely and easily, he constructed a structure of DNA firstly. The model was touchable, and through touching the model and listening to teacher’s explanation, I finally knew the appearance of DNA. Then, my teacher played an animated video indicating the process of heredity vividly and drew a picture that demonstrated the process directly. Contrary to reading articles about DNA,  I listened and watched the stuffs that teacher tried to show us and guide us to comprehend the whole DNA thing. Under such assistance, I easily figured out the content of the theoretical essay.

In conclusion, literacy learning is based on distinctive modes of communication for me, such as visual texts, verbal analysis, gestural structure and so on.
