Literacy Learning Experience 

 

Although I'm still on the way of learning literacy, I do have some thoughts and expectations from my own experience. We Chinese students, mostly, started to learn literacy when we prepared to study abroad. Our goals were few and our sights were narrow, only concentrating on the exam stuff, such as TOEFL or SAT. And as a member of the ‘ abroad party’, I started to learn literacy in the same way. English is not our first language, so whatever methods were used to help us to learn about this foreign language, I think most of the Chinese students still believe that Chinese is the fastest way to get information. It was in Singapore I discovered this appearance and I found that if I can’t get information directly from English, two of the disasters will happen: One, I could not improve my ability of literacy in English anymore without reading articles, newspapers. Two, medias which use English to report are always the fastest ones. After knowing that issue, I started to force myself to read something in English in order to improve my literacy learning. According to my hobby, I took the Wall street Journal to be my first choice, not only because I’m found at economics and finance, but also it's a good newspaper to get information quickly and trustworthy.  While the information on that newspaper was so much that I can’t read all of them as a high school student. There were several methods I used to improve the speed of reading: First, always read the directory! This tells about what topics this book or newspaper would have and the main thesis of articles. Next, find the outline or writers’ ideas as quickly as possible. It can save much time than reading the examples or stories and then come to a conclusion. 

 

 

But I found these simple strategies were no more helpful since I reached the U.S. I can neither read as quickly as native speakers nor understand the meaning completely. Literature is no longer means only tests, it becomes both the tool to study and way to communicate. So the aim of mine is direct and simple--able to read as native speaker, and also have deeper understanding on Literature.
