Writing Assignment No.5

Frank/ Rui Wang
Writing Assignment No.5
The first audio of a young woman tells us about her first experience of writing and giving a speech in front of the public which make her feel the strength of a speech to a group of people.
In the second video, the woman tell us about how she has been loving the magazine ‘ Weekly Entertainment’ since her childhood and how that magazine affects her way of writing and her behavior.
The third audio of a man recounts 2 significant literacy narrative experiences in his life which help him develop a good reading habit. One is that when he was 4th grade, his teacher asked them to read an article along with her and the man pointed out several mispronunciations of the teacher which made the teacher didn’t like him. The second is that when he was in 6th grade, whenever he took math classes, he read his own books without listening to the teacher’s lectures no matter where he sat which made his math teacher not like him and told his parents about it.
The fourth audio narrates a life experience of a boy which changed the boy from not liking reading at all to indulging in reading. Their teacher took them to a library and let them read books they like. However, the boy just found a place to play with his pencil and thought about something about aliens.  When the boy was caught playing with a pencil by the teacher, the teacher took him to a book shelf and pulled out a book which she thought the boy might be interested in. After rejecting the teacher’s suggestion first, the boy began reading the book unwillingly. At first, the boy wanted to hand the book back to the teacher for a picture of a girl on the cover. However, when starting reading the book, he found several things that were appealing to him which let him continue reading until the time to leave the library. Since then, the boy found reading very constructive and beneficial to their life.
The last audio mainly tells us about the process of how the girl became fond of computer and how the surrounding circumstances change her in choosing an English major instead of computer.
In my personal perspective, I am convinced that literacy learning is the most significant and indispensable process one must experience in his life which is quite constructive and beneficial to one’s future life and work. During our literacy learning process, what we need to do is not only just to learn the knowledge in the book but also to apply what we have learned to our daily life, including having a daily communication with other people in the society, reading corresponding books once we have learned something in order to be familiar with them, listening to speeches or giving a speech in front of a group of people just like the girl in the first audio did  in her middle school even though she was shy and she first felt the power of a speech(summarized from the first audio) and so on. Sometimes, a literacy experience can be quite accidental. The boy’s experience in the fourth audio can substantiate my point. According to the fourth audio, the boy originally didn't like reading at all until the teacher asked him to read a book for the boy’s sneaky playing with his pencil and that’s when he first found reading appealing and interesting. Moreover, he found reading a constructive tool to enlarge one’s vision.  A literacy experience can also shape one’s behavior and even style of writing. The woman in the second video tells us a true story about herself which directly illustrates my point. The women has been reading ‘Weekly Magazine’ since she was a child and gradually , her writing style as writer was shaped resulted from her continuing reading of ‘Weekly Magazine’ and so was her behavior.( Summarized from the second video)

All in all, literacy experiences are quite precious and significant for us to succeed .

Summary
The literacy plays a really important role in both of the African-American women's lifetime. In their perspective, they cannot image that there is one day that they cannot read any more. Maybe it's the natural gift for them that whenever they read and write the word, they will always be excited overwhelmingly. So reading and writing anything and anytime have been parts of their lives.

As the beginning of their career of literacy, letters taught them how to read , engaged them to pay attention to the words and gave them the opportunities to learn to express themselves properly. Another key factor that foster them to keeping reading and writing is the family who is the first mentors for us. A good mentor will have a meaningful influence on our life and lead us to the ultimate success in many fields.

The second mentor for us is the schools. In both elementary school and high school, we will improve ourselves in every aspect. The unlimited material resources provided to us will not only broaden our vision and accumulate our knowledge, but also progress our skill of reading and writing. Both these two African-American women's experiences are good proofs as well. In this modern society, we are in the better condition that we don't need to worry about the sparse and precious resource and the half-opened society which treat women and different races unfairly that the majority of people thought that women did not need to get the education but rather to stay at home. China is actually the typical example. In the traditional opinion, women had better to stay at home to play the instruments and to take care of the children instead of getting the further education. Luckily, the situation has changed already.

From the traditional perspective, the only pathway for students to achieve their dreams is to go to the university and then they can find the better work just because of the further education degree. However, these two professors hold the distinct standpoint completely. The experience and the diverse styles of education are also crucial---- working in the different situations, learning to study by ourselves and changing reverse environment to gain the knowledge. From that sense, one of the professor chose to study aboard and participate a program so that she can obtain the right to read and books in the library unlimitedly. The experience will play a significant role on her life everlastingly. Another professor made the varied decision that she chose to work during school time. We cannot recognize which of the choices will be better for us but both of the experience will be outstanding.

The last one that came to my mind impressed is keeping using the pad and pencil instead of computer. We cannot neglect that computers work more effectively than any other methods. To a great degree, keep using the pencils to take note will frustrate to cover every points effectively. However, pencils will provide us the diverse experience as the most traditional way so that it will give us a feeling of close to the words and literacy.

This is my summary and reflect upon this narrative.

Literary Narrative Yue Li

In this article, the writer was a person who hated writing papers, but her high school teacher was helping her to get over this.  At the beginning she did not knew the right way to write a paper. Then she found her teacher to help her while she got to her sophomore year. Her writing skills got better and she could got all A's on her writing assignment after the practice. The teacher taught her in her sophomore year was also the teacher taught writing in her senior year. Then English class became to there favorite class. Right now the writer can enjoy the process of the writing and got 96% on her 10pages research paper. The teacher became to her role model, because she made the writer became to a person who love writing and reading.
In my opinion, it is really important to have a good teacher who can invite me to study in a happy way, let me enjoy the process of learning. Interest is the best teacher, I can learn faster if I love the knowledges I am learning. So teachers should let the students be interesting in what they are going to learn, and the students will have fun with it.

In this narrative video, this Africa-American history professor recalled her memory about her early literacy experience, high school, college and graduate studying situation, changes in values and attitude to new form of literacy. Via this video interview we can catch some clues about how her view, value and personality were developed and shaped.

The narrative begin with early her pre-school literacy life. This professors parent, different from others, put education into a very high position. Since narrator and her sister at the age of 3, they were told stores and lead to read by their parents. According to her own words, they were not aloud to watch TV until in high school and the main activity during her spear time is only reading books, mostly adventure novel. It is the funnest things to do, since the absent of TV. Not only reading along, they are also told to retell the context they have read to their parents. If there is anything else that interested her, it must be jazz music because her parents all love it, despite the fact that both of them cant play any instrument, and they may influenced her. After they moved to California from Chicago, she and her sister always love to create store base on the books they read and make up these stores in real life. They also change some stores into shows playing during festivals.

When the time she studying in elementary school, except reading novels, she read encyclopedia and magazines, mostly about nature under the influence of her mother. In the elementary school, main task is writing, and quote her own words i am more like a reader but not a writer

Nevertheless, the real hard wok appeared until she was admitted by Stanford University, where she have to read and write a lot. Her writing skills got practice and improved a lot ,which, she said, is useful later. Then she was asked how literacy and history study in high school, but, unfortunately she didnt have much interest toward her high school study life, instead of that, she believe college is the turning point of her life. So whats the difference between high school history class and the college one? The first is her high school history teacher actually is a football coach who knows less about history and dont care about it. Secondly, the high school history class is based on traditional narrative which is boring. However, the college history involve a huge mount of diverse knowledge. She learned many thing outside western civilization and many new topics.

To her own memory, before going to college, she was concerning which college should go and she felled very lucky to be admitted by Stanford. As for her sister, first went to Vanderbilt and then transfer to Stanford. Surprisedly, her parents gave total freedom to her in education issue without any passive-she were told just do the thing that she love.

In the college, she read and write much more, and began to conduct researches- first one in the second year which called minority summer exchange project, and Martin Luther King paper project nest year. They are both beneficial for her.

After graduate school, she started working Ohio State University until now. In the end, she talked about her opinion about some now technology which changes literacy. Like she dislike reading on screen, hardly ever send Email, rarely text people on phone because all of these make her feel far and far away from reading and writing. A very transitional serious scholar.

Homework podcast

I listened to That's how I learn English and below writing is the summery and my reflect to it.

That’s how I learn English

The first time he came to the US, he was seventh grade and he couldn’t make himself understood well because he rarely knew a few English greeting words and he spent his whole summer alone since he didn’t have any friends. Ms. Koh, the teacher at his ESL was expressing something to him by body language about what was happening on September 11, and he understood what she meant after turning on the television at home. He learnt to speak daily life conversation by watching the Simpson and also news report. At the end of eighth grade, he could understand most of the things Ms. Koh was saying and he understood that her husband was a pilot but the plane he was controlling wasn’t hijacked.
I could understand how he felt for the first few months of his school because I was a little bit in a similar situation as his. Learning a second language outside the home country without any knowledge about it has a lot of stages to overcome and might be overwhelming but I think the more the person whose learning it is serious, the better it gets quickly.

Literacy Narriative

Aria Fazelimanesh

I watched Chris Higgs interview about how he got interested in literature. Chris as a kid never liked reading, he would go to library and takes the book home but he never read them until he got obsessed with Jim Morrison and starts reading all of the books that Jim Morrison has read.  Chris didn’t do well in high school and as he said he always cheated or tried to skip school as much as he could.  Researching about every little details that Chris didn’t know in these books helped him learn a lot and enjoy reading much more. Now days when he goes to book store to buy books he only looks at the author’s last names because he knows which authors works interest him.
I can relate Chris’s relation to literacy to myself because I’m not a reader unless I read about the topics that really interest me. For example I like to read everything about Chelsea football club otherwise I get bored and distracted. Also parents play a big role in giving the kids the habit of reading.

Homework No.5 Mr.Zhang

Title:Rebel Reader

The reason I chose this talk to be my topic is that I had so similar experience on the process of learning literacy as the speaker. I still remember, on my 7th grade, there was one of my Chinese text tells about the story of the Battle of Waterloo. As I mentioned at class, Napoleon is one of my models whose bravery and perseverance deeply impacted me when I felt low. Well, back to the class. Because the text was just a story, our teacher didn't treat it importantly and told us to read by ourselves. What she focused on were only writing and new words. Luckily, I was seating on the last line of the classroom so that my teacher could never found my little secret: I borrowed a biography of Napoleon from the school library. So, after that Chinese class, as long as my teacher started to focused on new words, I would open the book and sunk myself into the battle field and palaces. Learn from the words and sentences, as well as learning how to describe real life more authentically.

However, my secret was finally found by my teacher and she told this thing to my mother. I was so nervous to be back to home and dared to look at her eyes. But my mother did not blame me anything about the reading. She just asked me if I really founded in reading books, I nodded. Beyond my expectation, she took out several history books from her back and told me that those books were the mission for that semester and I had to finish reading them before the vacation. I was so excited. What my mother have done not only saved my passion on reading books but also developed my interest on history. Since then, I read for something everyday, as long as I have some spare time, I would open a book or my Iphone and started to read. Ironically, although I spent a lot of time on reading, I still get a high score of my Chinese exam.

In my opinion plagiarism is not a good way to make own works.

First the reason that I don't agree plagiarism is,this behavior is not equitable.
The originator spend a lot of time to created it.They use it,because they spend a lot of time, money, energy on it.But if you plagiarism it, you will not have to spend them on it.You can use it very convenients.
For a example. If you make a new type of drink. You sell it,everyone love your new type drink. You make a lot of money. But one day someone plagiarize your recipe and also sell this new type drink. All clients going to buy his drink no one want to buy your drink will you be happy?  you will say "that is my drink".

Second it's not legal. If you plagiarism others also it's unapproved. You will break the law.The originator can take you to count.
Iphone is a commodity of Apple company.the phone's system is very convenience and foshion lot of people love the iphone and buy it.But Anycall  plagiarize the system from iphone. Then apple company charge the Anycall company to compensate for.

Third plagiarism is not respect the priginator's behavior. Everyone's production must be protected.Because all of them are people's wealth. You make it that's meanings you are make preciprice for all peoples that must considered. To protect your works is your human rights.
So in anyway. Don't plagiarism.

Gee

Gee's argument is:Literacy is a criterion about how to talk and act like a role. She give us an example the example tall as "trained " as linguist meant, that meanings to act like a linguist and aslo know others do it also.
Gree think to act a linguist is meaningful than just only have background of the whole social institution of linguistics.
Gree also give us some important points about the discourse.Such as discourse have ideology. And also is a important things in implicated values and viewpoints in speak and act.

Some people think discourses speak is not individuals. But in the historically way it's individualsed.People speak and act everyday is the reason that discourses have a develop. But there also have a question:"How does one come by the discourses that he controls?"
Acquisition that's meanings to get someting subconscious in exposure models and process. And learning is meanings the knowledge that someone teaching you. Also the balance between acquisition and learning is different.
In same way to understand the literacy is very difficult.Gee also give us a example about the reading class. In grammar school the reading is very important and base ability.Transit this example to tall us how difficult that understand the literacy is.
The literacy of a family is also very respectablity.A literacy of a famil
y are representative the family's history. Can tall there descendant who are they,it's very significative.

The different of the setting of acquisition and learning is a setting of acquisition is very stressed. And a setting of learning is very warm and sweet.Because the people in setting of acquisition will be a very selfishness person.  But the person in a learning setting will be a very nice person, because they will always think about share.

learning is a ability for children but acquisition not is. We begining to learning when we birth. We learned at school, learn the parents. We leaning all the life.
If someone always learning from you,you will be very happy. But if someone always acquistion from you,you will be not happy.
that is the different of leaning and acquisition.

Amanda response

Firstly, Amanda was caught plagiarism because her work had doubt on copying and pasting words and sentences from her online research sites, which contained 53 percent of them in her work. In addition, she claims that she just forgotten to write quotation mark on the quotation she cited from online, and this is not acceptable as a proper reason to deny her plagiarism because forgetting things is generally an excuse. Looking this case objectively, I believe she doesn’t have enough reasons to support her own denial and she hardly has chance to be innocent.

Homework 4

                                                             Plagiarism
In this fast-paced society, the increase number of people, from teenagers to the workers, cannot live without the digital devices. Of courses, the quickness, the convenience and the easiness are all of the advantages of the digital device. However, there is another problem arose that many people cannot use the citation and forms properly, like Amanda, who lost too much just due to the plagiarism.

American society set up a strict system, which seems to be a little impersonal sometimes, about the plagiarism. But why? Why we should serve the plagiarism such seriously and exaggeratedly? To a certain extent, the opinion or ideas represent one person's wisdom and hard work so that we should shoulder the responsibility to protect everyone's wisdom so that the software appeared. However, from my perspective, I don't think this machine-like method that use the machine to scan every sentences and even every words if they are similar to other materials. In this way, professor can evaluate the writing articles effectively and give them a seemly fair score. In my opinion, the evaluation of an article need to include every aspects, namely extract and developing ideas. In some situation, even though someone do a bad job about one of these aspects, we still need to consider other aspects synthesized. For example, someone fail to use the citation properly, but his developing statement show a excellent performance about that extract parts. In this case, I don't think we should deny this article directly or give it the most serious punishment. Deny the whole thing because of a mistake is not a considerate idea.

Also, the internet is another important factor that push Amanda in danger. As we know, internet in this information age is powerful enough to ruin almost everything. Yes! Amanda did wrong. But is it the action that attack other people, like" silly and stupid", regardless the respect of anybody is correct? It's ridicules ! Others mistake is not the pretence of our mistake. As an well-educated man, we should know not only academic honesty, but also the respect of everybody.

Yue Li's homework #4

In Amanda's case, she was caught in the school for cheating on the paper then it caused her got a F and fail to graduate from her college. Actually literacy narrative is about everything in their life, obviously including the book or the articles they have read. Then it is ok to take examples by the book. And another reason caused this is the new technology. In this time technology is taking part of human lives and it is getting better and better, however the tech is not good enough to instead of everything, because the technology is not human, it is helping the professor grading the paper but it cannot make the correct decision on cheating. Therefore the paper that Amanda wrote was showed 53 percent was cheat from the website and others paper. May be Amanda used too much examples in the paper, I agree about that, but what if she just memorized that sentence while she was reading the book and she used it in the paper? It already became to a part of her and she did not remember where it came from, that is literacy narrative from a book. The professor in college should read her paper first then to decide if she cheated or not. They should not give her a F because of the 53 percent cheating on her paper, because she already listed where all that information came from, that is not a cheat any more officially.
So the technology can not instead of the human in our life at this time, the professors should use their own opinion to think about what caused Amanda was cheated so much, it need also consider the expression of Amanda in other time of the life. Because if she was a girl that never cheat then there is a smaller chance that she cheated on the paper. And may be next time Amanda can use more her own words in the paper instead of find informations on the internet.

Writing Assignment No.4

Frank/ Rui Wang
Writing Assignment No.4
After carefully finish reading this article, I really feel sympathetic for Amanda’s encounter and is indignant about the grading system in RU which directly renders Amanda’s final paper failed. Here, I will make a few comments about my feelings for Amanda’s encounter.
About the grading system in RU, I really think that it is inhumane. How can a grading system understand a writer’s feeling precisely? How can a writer’s article be corrected by a grading system that is less humane than being corrected manually? How can we tell that the writer plagarizes only for his atricles’ partial similarity with the articles or webs in its database? The grading system is so technological that it almost replaces manual grading which is the most conventional way to grade a student’s paper. It is not difficult for us to find that the bureaucratic policy in RU and the ‘hackneyed’ grading system which has a fixed grading rubric according to the database in it which contains numerous amount of books in different areas, all kinds of articles and websites. The teacher just need to put the student’s article in this system and all the grammatical mistakes and similarity to materials in its database will appear on screen in conspicuous colors and then the teacher can easily give the grade for the student’s paper according to the rubric. Technology advance is great but can we use it in appropriate ways in order to make our life a little bit more energetic not so mechanized and not make another Amanda appears?
About the commenters who make comments about Amanda’s plagarism,  what they said is utterly groundless since they haven’t read Amanda’s final paper so that they are not even qualified to comment on this case. What they do is just ‘go with the stream’ and what they saw on the website is just the plagarism of Amanda in her final paper. They don’t know what Amanda is intended to mean in her paper and their incessant ridiculing and mocking comments on Amanda’s behavior finally rendered Amanda to be silent and spare the keyboard to her father since she found that her innocence can never be confirmed and she felt despaired about the comment made by people who even don’t read her paper. So, these commenters are unreasonable and unrationable.
To be honest, I am really averse and disgusted with the automatically grading system’s replacement of the manual grading. All I hope is people can take sensible use of the technology in this modern society and not make another situation like this take place.

Amanda's Case

In my opinion Amanda is guilty in this case because more than 50% of her work turned out to be copied from the Internet and she doesn’t have reasonable excuses for proving that what she has done is not plagiarism. I believe that everyone has to be responsible for everything they do.
It is a very good strict rule in American education that does not let students copy anyone’s work because it prepares the students for their future jobs when they have to deal with real world problems.
