Choose one of
these cases and discuss whether or not you think the case
constitutes hate speech as Matsuda defines it.
From Matsuda's
perspective, the definition of "the hate speech" is the sexist and
raciest speeches which motivated by hate. We can learn the damage of the hate
speech from the three main aspects: the equation of access to all aspects of
the university; the liberty from the oppression on campus; the free speech to
debate issues. Then I will apply the definition given by Matsuda to evaluate
the first case.
The white students in
first case affronted a small group of black women who really did something in
public , regardless of others' feelings. However, is it really the hate speech?
did he actually harm those women psychologically? did he limit the opportunities
of those people of color to access to the campus? did he hamper the freedom
debate? and what about the event that the black destroy all the newspaper just
because of their emotion? I will cope with all of these questions one by one.
First of all, as we know,
those women actually create an terrible influence in public that they disturbed
other students to study, ignoring others' feelings and admonishment. From this
white student's perspective, it is, to some extent, rational for him to alarm
those self-centered black women, even if his method to handle the problem is a
bit extreme. Also, an important point I have to mention is that he didn't
actually use some discriminating expression. So we can say that the rude
expression of this white student surely did psychological harm for those women ,
but we cannot classify the rude expression into the discrimination.
Secondly, this white
student's behavior impede the freedom speech, whatever whether the
discriminating expression or not. The verbal abuse, such as this white
student's behavior, alleviate people's desire to express their opinions in
rational ways but rather increase their desire to solve the problems in means
of physical assault.
Conclusion from analysis
above, we have to confess the verbal expression of the white student is the
hate speech in fact. But what about another event which occurred at the same
time----people of color expressed their dissent opinion also using the rudely
method. So both of these two events has to be limited.
The university, as the
special institution which stand for many meaningful things, such as the pursuit
of knowledge, should shoulder the responsibility to educate students in the
scientific ways but not just restrict and punish students' behaviors. This is
what the university should do.

This part are talking
about media.first they give us a example about printing this is a kind of way
about media. Then they talk about how does media useing to transmit massage.
You can pass massage any
where you want. You can pass in library, restaurant, mall also you can pass on
internet. In the twenty-first-century delivery massage is very easy.
For this I think the
internet was more convenience.Because you can get in very where you want.Like
library you must be go there and if you want different exchange you must go to
different place but internet you don't need this.
If you want to talk with
your middle school and primary school classment if you are in place you have to
go to two place to meet them bue if you have internet you can just send the

There is also the way that
people pass the knowledge. On this way knowledge was be passed very fast. Like
you can go to library or internet to check everything you wangt to help you .
In there ,they have everything you want.
If you want write

In the book, the writer wrote about what the technology changed on our life and study, there are both positive and negative opinions in the article about the new media's influence. There are several paragraph mentioned me the internet blocked the face-to-face social connection between people. At home his wife have to start their work after she finished all the online work. The writer himself is also afraid of the plenty of e-mail everyday.
I agree on the writer's opinion, the new media made our life better, but it also separate people by individuals. Our face-to-face connections are decreasing. The attention we put on our real life is much more less, we want to finish the online business before to start a new day, and the social net work is transfer from off line to online. We should practice our attention control, make sure that when we are searching online, we should task of finding the information you need at the moment you need it, learning what we need at the moment we need it, learning what we need to learn and forgetting what we don't need, and most important, learning how to filter out the bad info. (Page15)So that we can save more time on the computer and turn our face to our real life at the moment.

He also mentions that you can not be successful with knowing different skills, and you have to know how to use them in today's world with communication, collaboration, participation and network and he believes that without these people can drown themselves "in torrents of misinformation, disinformation, advertisement, spam, porn, noise, and trivia".

How does Delpit respond to Gee? Who do you agree with and why?
Since we have read about the definitions of Literacy given by Gee and discussed about the understanding of Literacy before, what were demonstrated by Delpit in the passage appeared to be a very good critical thinking of Gee's opinion. And as the same as us, the writer Delpit first agreed with Gee's identification of Discourses. But after further thinking of First Discourses and Second Discourses ( given from School and Home), Delpit found that what Gee demonstrated that the two different statuses--socially dominant and some nondominant were seemed different from his and his colleagues' experience who helped to educate the poor children and children of color.
Next, he gives out what the different points: 1. Delpit thought Gee had overly estimated the difficulty if man was 'not been born into Dominant Discourses and wanted to understand it. 2.He thought that Gee had also over demonstrated the trouble and conflicts when ' attempting to acquire another Discourses' (P 266). Followed with the negative effects which Gee's idea would brought, Delpit demonstrated those 'successful' African American should also acquire another Discourse instead of his own one.
According to my point of view, I would definitely agree with what Gee said. As I came to the U.S, I've made over 200 friends but most of them are Chinese. I can even count my American friends' number with my fingers. The reason of this is obvious: difference in speaking, which should be concluded to Gee's 'Second Discourses'. I tried quite hard to communicate with them, just similar as Delpits' example, but the relationship between me and my American friends was just saying Hello to each other. Although Delpit did believe this could be overcame, for me, I think, it should be an impossible mission--I have to do that all the time, but no final answer.

What part of Rheingold’s argument
intrigues you? Why?
The experience of the author that to
teach her students in means of the internet system instead of the traditional
methods intrigues me greatly. Unlike the face-to face communication, using the
network to teach students, that students will be always-and -everywhere with
the computer instead of put more effort on the professor himself, will be
benefit of cultivate students to be proficient at using the internet system
intelligently. There are the advantages and the negative effects at the same
time. Learning to select the inflow of information we receive is a tough
challenge for students that we should know ourselves very well including
knowing what the information we need actually and how long we should spend on
it. Students who can master to use the internet will gain countless benefit
that from personal aspect that they will broaden their network and impersonal
aspect that the effort of every individual participating to the internet will be
combined to the exceptional energy for the society. On the contrary, the
students who cannot let themselves under control will lose themselves through
the internet channel. So practicing ourselves to exert the control to be away
from the temptation, namely useless or unhealthy information, is the key to master the internet.
From my perspective, refusing to
develop the internet is not a good method for us to be successful in this twenty-first
century. The computer will not only enhance the efficiency to finish the assignments,
but also share the knowledge and intelligence with each other. In another
aspect, the flow of information will distract us that the doing multitask is
not a good habit for the majority, including me, because we are not capable of
pay most of our attention on the meaningful things. For an instance, when I
have concentrated on the assignment for a long time, I will eager to go the Face
book to relax myself. In fact, I will be out of control when I encounter so
many engaged stuffs. In this case, the useless information lead me to lose
myself.
The author point out one of the most
crucial problem for the majority and provide us an excellent way to avoid this
problem that we should ask ourselves what we really want before we make the
decision to use any media. This is the part of the article I like best.

When Delpt fitst reading Gee's passage he agreed whth muc of Gee's wote, that lieracy is much more that reading and writing als that's part of larger political entity.Gee also think all discanise are not equal in status. with this point people wos talking about. But Delpt agree whit this point.
There are two aspects of Gee'sarguments. the first is people have not been born in to dominant Discourses will find it exceedingly diffcult if not impossible,to acquire such a Discourse.Delpt think this is learn the "rules".The second one is Discourse with another set pf calues Gee difines this as especially pertinent.Delpt disagree with this point. He think if teachers were to adopt borh of these premises suggested by Gee's work not only would they view the acquisition of a new discourse in a classroom impossible to achieve.
The begining of literacy is very important. If students feel literacy reject them they will reject literacy first. He talk about a student's story to improve this point.
Teachers can help student make them have interest with literature also can teach them knowledge. student's interests was depend on teacher's ability if you teaching very fascinating you will make your student more love this course.

In the book that Delpit wrote, there are opposite opinions on the points that Gee gave to us. In Gee's book, he was agree that the way to acquire literacy is much better than the way of learning, because people can acquire during life and it is like a born ability, once people remember all the literacy knowledges then it is hard to be erase. Students could learn it through the environment around them, and the way of studying will not be that boring and hard. The only weakness of acquisition is it will take a long time and many steps to finish, it is much harder than learning.
But in Delpit's book, the opinion about how to study has changed, he thought that the student could learn even better than acquisition if the teacher gave them the right reason to encourage them. It happened on black people and the students who does not have a good environment to grow up, maybe parents are both uneducated. The right way to teach them is to tell the students how tough the world is, and tell them the world will not always leave the door open for them if they do not work hard, the only short cut is to work hard. And there are some examples in the paragraph, like the student in medical program and the black student in the football team, they knew their situation clearly and they knew the only thing they could do was to study. Those kids found they can do great under pressure, so when they are lazy, they can just find something to encourage them, give them pressure, it is also a great way to study literature.
Another point is the students should develop their "own voice", they should have their own opinion about what they are writing and learning. But the opinion should have strong reasons to support, and it should not be reject all the time blindly. The teacher should treat the like the same, color and family is not the problem, they should not influence the way that teacher treat each students. So the language that the students and teachers are using is important.
Writing Assignment No.6
According to Delpit, he disagrees with Gee in two aspects---- first, he thinks that people not born in dominant discourses can also acquire them in class settings through some specific methods and second, he believes that many people have overcome the difficult when they learn and teach a second dominant language. In order to illustrate his points of view, he cites several experiences people had in successfully overcoming the difficulty in learning or teaching a second dominant language and then became outstanding people in their career. Finally, Delpit talks about several methods teachers can take to economically disenfranchised students and students of color both to master the dominant discourses and to transform them. (P.271 paragraph 1)
In my own perspective, I stand by the side of Delpit since I am convinced that the chances to learn a second discourses should be equal to everyone, not relating to their social status. Then, I think that more and more teachers should be committed to teaching a second dominant discourse in some ways that don't opposes the students original values to avoid the students' refusing to learn.

Delpit disagrees with Gee’s opinion mainly in two aspects, the first one is that people who are not born into the mainstream dominant Discourse find it will be extremely hard to get into the dominant Discourse. Gee holds a notion deeply that to learn how to acquire dominant Discourse, one has to have access to those social institution which have connection to that Discourse, otherwise, forget about it.
Considering that Gee’s idea is dangerous, Delpit overthrow Gee’s idea by examples which non-mainstream people overcoming obstacles and acquire dominant Discourse.
Like the stories of two very successful Africa American men. Clarence Cunningham, a distinguished man in his own flied, was born in a poor family and educated in an all-Africa American elementary school in 1930’s. According Gee’s view, Cunningham’s situation must be far from “dominant Discourse”, however, not only Cunningham, but most of his classmates become elites in all walks of life years later. Another person is colleague and friend of Delpit- Bill Trent, whose father, a cook, has a 8 grade education background from night-school and mother who only has 3 grade education. Also has nothing to do with dominant Discourse, Bill Trent and his many classmates achieved a lots in their life.
The second aspect which Delpit consider problematic is when a person who born into one discourse and try to acquire another discourse will experience conflicts sice the difference of values, particularly to female and minorities.
Disagree with Gee, Delpit takes Keith Gilyard as a example- it is possible for people acquire another discourse without conflicts and resistances.
Personally speaking, i agree with Delpit’s opinion instead of Gee’s. Everyone can join into dominant Discourse if he or she wants and try for that. It may be harder for minorities, but, if people are guide correctly, the possibility will steel be high. If the teachers follows Gee’s idea, it could be harder for people from other discourses to get into dominant Discourse. In the end, this society will become more and more “Gee”.
Nevertheless, the teachers follow the rules of Delpit, i believe not only will more and more people will be part of dominant Discourse but also the dominant Discourse will acquire the advantages from other Discourse.

Delpit
Delpit
I assume that Delpit’s
argument/accusation towards Gee is that learning and acquiring things are based
on a person’s motivation and vision for one’s goal. Parents’ or the
environments they belong to are not so relevance and also teachers’ inspiration
on students seems to play a significant role in their success. The students in
the photo, in which the African American man had succeeded in their career even
though they were in ragtag group when they were young. I strongly agree to
Delpit because gaining a general oneself level is the most important thing in
order to be an adult, rather by acquiring/learning discourse by literacy. Of
course, reading and writing is necessary for every one, though you can learn or
acquire it whenever you encounter the problem.
Delpit
Delpit disagrees with the fact that
secondary discourses can not be taught by teachers or a person can not have a dominant
discourses unless they acquire it at home. Delpit gives several examples about
the people who were born in very poor families but then in the future they
developed dominant discourses at school by their teachers. I strongly agree
with Delpit about when he says The students who choose to listen to what their
teachers tell the to do better, they are the ones who can develop dominant
discourses outside of home.
I
agree with both Gee and Delpit. If we talk about the average population then
Gee is right because Delpit is talking about individuals who have made it.

The whole passage is the
argument about GEE's opinion concerning that literacy is actually a large
political entity. From GEE's perspective, the literacy means reading and
writing within a set of large discourses which can be divided into primary
discourse and secondary discourse. The opportunities of literacy are not equal
for everybody because of different status. For the primary discourse which is
the home education, the born right of kids to obtain education is various.
Also, the secondary discourse which is learning attached to the institutes or
groups is related to the primary discourse so that it's unequal as well.
However, the author stand in
contrast that the prerequisite of GEE's viewpoint is that children cannot get
the 'overtly' education and that children born in one discourse will meet the
conflict when they acquire another discourse. In fact, this prerequisite is not
exist. The most important meaning of the existence of the teachers is to help
the children in the lower-status change their destiny.
Marge who is a girl in
lower status is a excellent example to prove everyone in any status can write
his or her own destiny in means of teachers' instruction. Fellowship gives
Marge second chance to further the education even though she has a terrible GRE
score. Through a whole year's hard works, Marge can writer better than anyone
in her classroom. The lower-status cannot resist her to make the progress. If I
want to give the cases like this one, the list will be going on. Teachers
contribute their lifetime to ensure their student to live up to their
expectations. The fact has been proved that most of the outstanding persons
succeed outside their realms of power and status and have no access to the
status institutes as well.
Of course, the pheromone
is people of color in many cases reject the literacy and also feel the literacy
reject them. However, the duty of the instructors is to try their best to
reduce the possibility for them to choose 'not learn'. Like the other
says:"Acquiring the ability to function in dominant discourse need not
mean that one must reject one's home identity and values, for discourses are
not static, but are shaped, however reluctantly, by those who participate
within them and by the form of their participation' (page 271), those
disenfranchised students can not only master the dominant discourses, but also
transform them.
From my standpoint, I
agree with the author's perspective. Everyone should have the same right to
gain the equal education and thousands of people are contributing to achieve
it. For example, in china, the country always provide plenty of money to the
poor children so that they can further their study. In another case in china, a
great deal of volunteer go to the poor place to help the students in academic
area. However, equal to every is still a dream. For a instance, our
international students who have the opportunities to study aboard, getting the
best education in the world, is related to the economic condition, confessedly.
Even though all of the students can admit into the university one day, there
are still have the gap between the rich and the poor, the white and the black.
But all of us will strive to achieve our dream days and nights.

Writing Assignment
No.5
The first audio of
a young woman tells us about her first experience of writing and giving a
speech in front of the public which make her feel the strength of a speech to a
group of people.
In the second
video, the woman tell us about how she has been loving the magazine ‘ Weekly
Entertainment’ since her childhood and how that magazine affects her way of
writing and her behavior.
The third audio of
a man recounts 2 significant literacy narrative experiences in his life which
help him develop a good reading habit. One is that when he was 4th
grade, his teacher asked them to read an article along with her and the man
pointed out several mispronunciations of the teacher which made the teacher didn’t
like him. The second is that when he was in 6th grade, whenever he
took math classes, he read his own books without listening to the teacher’s
lectures no matter where he sat which made his math teacher not like him and
told his parents about it.
The fourth audio narrates
a life experience of a boy which changed the boy from not liking reading at all
to indulging in reading. Their teacher took them to a library and let them read
books they like. However, the boy just found a place to play with his pencil
and thought about something about aliens. When the boy was caught playing with a pencil
by the teacher, the teacher took him to a book shelf and pulled out a book
which she thought the boy might be interested in. After rejecting the teacher’s
suggestion first, the boy began reading the book unwillingly. At first, the boy
wanted to hand the book back to the teacher for a picture of a girl on the
cover. However, when starting reading the book, he found several things that
were appealing to him which let him continue reading until the time to leave
the library. Since then, the boy found reading very constructive and beneficial
to their life.
The last audio
mainly tells us about the process of how the girl became fond of computer and
how the surrounding circumstances change her in choosing an English major
instead of computer.
In my personal
perspective, I am convinced that literacy learning is the most significant and
indispensable process one must experience in his life which is quite
constructive and beneficial to one’s future life and work. During our literacy
learning process, what we need to do is not only just to learn the knowledge in
the book but also to apply what we have learned to our daily life, including having
a daily communication with other people in the society, reading corresponding
books once we have learned something in order to be familiar with them, listening
to speeches or giving a speech in front of a group of people just like the girl
in the first audio did in her middle
school even though she was shy and she first felt the power of a speech(summarized
from the first audio) and so on. Sometimes, a literacy experience can be quite
accidental. The boy’s experience in the fourth audio can substantiate my point.
According to the fourth audio, the boy originally didn't like reading at all
until the teacher asked him to read a book for the boy’s sneaky playing with
his pencil and that’s when he first found reading appealing and interesting.
Moreover, he found reading a constructive tool to enlarge one’s vision. A literacy experience can also shape one’s
behavior and even style of writing. The woman in the second video tells us a
true story about herself which directly illustrates my point. The women has
been reading ‘Weekly Magazine’ since she was a child and gradually , her
writing style as writer was shaped resulted from her continuing reading of ‘Weekly
Magazine’ and so was her behavior.( Summarized from the second video)
All in all, literacy
experiences are quite precious and significant for us to succeed .

Summary
The literacy plays a really important role in both of the African-American women's lifetime. In their perspective, they cannot image that there is one day that they cannot read any more. Maybe it's the natural gift for them that whenever they read and write the word, they will always be excited overwhelmingly. So reading and writing anything and anytime have been parts of their lives.
As the beginning of their career of literacy, letters taught them how to read , engaged them to pay attention to the words and gave them the opportunities to learn to express themselves properly. Another key factor that foster them to keeping reading and writing is the family who is the first mentors for us. A good mentor will have a meaningful influence on our life and lead us to the ultimate success in many fields.
The second mentor for us is the schools. In both elementary school and high school, we will improve ourselves in every aspect. The unlimited material resources provided to us will not only broaden our vision and accumulate our knowledge, but also progress our skill of reading and writing. Both these two African-American women's experiences are good proofs as well. In this modern society, we are in the better condition that we don't need to worry about the sparse and precious resource and the half-opened society which treat women and different races unfairly that the majority of people thought that women did not need to get the education but rather to stay at home. China is actually the typical example. In the traditional opinion, women had better to stay at home to play the instruments and to take care of the children instead of getting the further education. Luckily, the situation has changed already.
From the traditional perspective, the only pathway for students to achieve their dreams is to go to the university and then they can find the better work just because of the further education degree. However, these two professors hold the distinct standpoint completely. The experience and the diverse styles of education are also crucial---- working in the different situations, learning to study by ourselves and changing reverse environment to gain the knowledge. From that sense, one of the professor chose to study aboard and participate a program so that she can obtain the right to read and books in the library unlimitedly. The experience will play a significant role on her life everlastingly. Another professor made the varied decision that she chose to work during school time. We cannot recognize which of the choices will be better for us but both of the experience will be outstanding.
The last one that came to my mind impressed is keeping using the pad and pencil instead of computer. We cannot neglect that computers work more effectively than any other methods. To a great degree, keep using the pencils to take note will frustrate to cover every points effectively. However, pencils will provide us the diverse experience as the most traditional way so that it will give us a feeling of close to the words and literacy.
This is my summary and reflect upon this narrative.
Literary Narrative Yue Li
In this article, the writer was a person who hated writing papers, but her high school teacher was helping her to get over this. At the beginning she did not knew the right way to write a paper. Then she found her teacher to help her while she got to her sophomore year. Her writing skills got better and she could got all A's on her writing assignment after the practice. The teacher taught her in her sophomore year was also the teacher taught writing in her senior year. Then English class became to there favorite class. Right now the writer can enjoy the process of the writing and got 96% on her 10pages research paper. The teacher became to her role model, because she made the writer became to a person who love writing and reading.
In my opinion, it is really important to have a good teacher who can invite me to study in a happy way, let me enjoy the process of learning. Interest is the best teacher, I can learn faster if I love the knowledges I am learning. So teachers should let the students be interesting in what they are going to learn, and the students will have fun with it.

In this narrative video, this Africa-American history professor recalled her memory about her early literacy experience, high school, college and graduate studying situation, changes in values and attitude to new form of literacy. Via this video interview we can catch some clues about how her view, value and personality were developed and shaped.
The narrative begin with early her pre-school literacy life. This professor’s parent, different from others, put education into a very high position. Since narrator and her sister at the age of 3, they were told stores and lead to read by their parents. According to her own words, they were not aloud to watch TV until in high school and the main activity during her spear time is only reading books, mostly adventure novel. It is the funnest things to do, since the absent of TV. Not only reading along, they are also told to retell the context they have read to their parents. If there is anything else that interested her, it must be jazz music because her parents all love it, despite the fact that both of them can’t play any instrument, and they may influenced her. After they moved to California from Chicago, she and her sister always love to create store base on the books they read and make up these stores in real life. They also change some stores into shows playing during festivals.
When the time she studying in elementary school, except reading novels, she read encyclopedia and magazines, mostly about nature under the influence of her mother. In the elementary school, main task is writing, and quote her own words “i am more like a reader but not a writer”.
Nevertheless, the real hard wok appeared until she was admitted by Stanford University, where she have to read and write a lot. Her writing skills got practice and improved a lot ,which, she said, “is useful later”. Then she was asked how literacy and history study in high school, but, unfortunately she didn’t have much interest toward her high school study life, instead of that, she believe college is the turning point of her life. So what’s the difference between high school history class and the college one? The first is her high school history teacher actually is a football coach who knows less about history and don’t care about it. Secondly, the high school history class is based on traditional narrative which is boring. However, the college history involve a huge mount of diverse knowledge. She learned many thing outside western civilization and many new topics.
To her own memory, before going to college, she was concerning which college should go and she felled very lucky to be admitted by Stanford. As for her sister, first went to Vanderbilt and then transfer to Stanford. Surprisedly, her parents gave total freedom to her in education issue without any passive-she were told just do the thing that she love.
In the college, she read and write much more, and began to conduct researches- first one in the second year which called minority summer exchange project, and Martin Luther King paper project nest year. They are both beneficial for her.
After graduate school, she started working Ohio State University until now. In the end, she talked about her opinion about some now technology which changes literacy. Like she dislike reading on screen, hardly ever send Email, rarely text people on phone because all of these make her feel far and far away from reading and writing. A very transitional serious scholar.
Homework podcast
I listened to That's how I learn English and below writing is the summery and my reflect to it.
That’s how I learn English
The
first time he came to the US, he was seventh grade and he couldn’t make himself
understood well because he rarely knew a few English greeting words and he
spent his whole summer alone since he didn’t have any friends. Ms. Koh, the
teacher at his ESL was expressing something to him by body language about what
was happening on September 11, and he understood what she meant after turning
on the television at home. He learnt to speak daily life conversation by
watching the Simpson and also news report. At the end of eighth grade, he could
understand most of the things Ms. Koh was saying and he understood that her
husband was a pilot but the plane he was controlling wasn’t hijacked.
I
could understand how he felt for the first few months of his school because I
was a little bit in a similar situation as his. Learning a second language
outside the home country without any knowledge about it has a lot of stages to
overcome and might be overwhelming but I think the more the person whose
learning it is serious, the better it gets quickly.

I watched Chris
Higgs interview about how he got interested in literature. Chris as a kid never
liked reading, he would go to library and takes the book home but he never read
them until he got obsessed with Jim Morrison and starts reading all of the books
that Jim Morrison has read. Chris didn’t
do well in high school and as he said he always cheated or tried to skip school
as much as he could. Researching about
every little details that Chris didn’t know in these books helped him learn a
lot and enjoy reading much more. Now days when he goes to book store to buy
books he only looks at the author’s last names because he knows which authors
works interest him.
I
can relate Chris’s relation to literacy to myself because I’m not a reader
unless I read about the topics that really interest me. For example I like to
read everything about Chelsea football club otherwise I get bored and
distracted. Also parents play a big role in giving the kids the habit of
reading.
