The whole passage is the argument about GEE's opinion concerning that literacy is actually a large political entity. From GEE's perspective, the literacy means reading and writing within a set of large discourses which can be divided into primary discourse and secondary discourse. The opportunities of literacy are not equal for everybody because of different status. For the primary discourse which is the home education, the born right of kids to obtain education is various. Also, the secondary discourse which is learning attached to the institutes or groups is related to the primary discourse so that it's unequal as well.

However, the author stand in contrast that the prerequisite of GEE's viewpoint is that children cannot get the 'overtly' education and that children born in one discourse will meet the conflict when they acquire another discourse. In fact, this prerequisite is not exist. The most important meaning of the existence of the teachers is to help the children in the lower-status change their destiny.

Marge who is a girl in lower status is a excellent example to prove everyone in any status can write his or her own destiny in means of teachers' instruction. Fellowship gives Marge second chance to further the education even though she has a terrible GRE score. Through a whole year's hard works, Marge can writer better than anyone in her classroom. The lower-status cannot resist her to make the progress. If I want to give the cases like this one, the list will be going on. Teachers contribute their lifetime to ensure their student to live up to their expectations. The fact has been proved that most of the outstanding persons succeed outside their realms of power and status and have no access to the status institutes as well.

Of course, the pheromone is people of color in many cases reject the literacy and also feel the literacy reject them. However, the duty of the instructors is to try their best to reduce the possibility for them to choose 'not learn'. Like the other says:"Acquiring the ability to function in dominant discourse need not mean that one must reject one's home identity and values, for discourses are not static, but are shaped, however reluctantly, by those who participate within them and by the form of their participation' (page 271), those disenfranchised students can not only master the dominant discourses, but also transform them.

From my standpoint, I agree with the author's perspective. Everyone should have the same right to gain the equal education and thousands of people are contributing to achieve it. For example, in china, the country always provide plenty of money to the poor children so that they can further their study. In another case in china, a great deal of volunteer go to the poor place to help the students in academic area. However, equal to every is still a dream. For a instance, our international students who have the opportunities to study aboard, getting the best education in the world, is related to the economic condition, confessedly. Even though all of the students can admit into the university one day, there are still have the gap between the rich and the poor, the white and the black. But all of us will strive to achieve our dream days and nights.
