Delpit disagrees with Gee’s opinion mainly in two aspects, the first one is that people who are not born into the mainstream dominant Discourse find it will be extremely hard to get into the dominant Discourse. Gee holds a notion deeply that to learn how to acquire dominant Discourse, one has to have access to those social institution which have connection to that Discourse, otherwise, forget about it.
Considering that Gee’s idea is dangerous, Delpit overthrow Gee’s idea by examples which non-mainstream people overcoming obstacles and acquire dominant Discourse.
Like the stories of two very successful Africa American men. Clarence Cunningham, a distinguished man in his own flied, was born in a poor family and educated in an all-Africa American elementary school in 1930’s. According Gee’s view, Cunningham’s situation must be far from “dominant Discourse”, however, not only Cunningham, but most of his classmates become elites in all walks of life years later. Another person is colleague and friend of Delpit- Bill Trent, whose father, a cook, has a 8 grade education background from night-school and mother who only has 3 grade education. Also has nothing to do with dominant Discourse, Bill Trent and his many classmates achieved a lots in their life.
The second aspect which Delpit consider problematic is when a person who born into one discourse and try to acquire another discourse will experience conflicts sice the difference of values, particularly to female and minorities.
Disagree with Gee, Delpit takes Keith Gilyard as a example- it is possible for people acquire another discourse without conflicts and resistances.
Personally speaking, i agree with Delpit’s opinion instead of Gee’s. Everyone can join into dominant Discourse if he or she wants and try for that. It may be harder for minorities, but, if people are guide correctly, the possibility will steel be high. If the teachers follows Gee’s idea, it could be harder for people from other discourses to get into dominant Discourse. In the end, this society will become more and more “Gee”.
Nevertheless, the teachers follow the rules of Delpit, i believe not only will more and more people will be part of dominant Discourse but also the dominant Discourse will acquire the advantages from other Discourse.
