Choose one of
these cases and discuss whether or not you think the case
constitutes hate speech as Matsuda defines it.
From Matsuda's
perspective, the definition of "the hate speech" is the sexist and
raciest speeches which motivated by hate. We can learn the damage of the hate
speech from the three main aspects: the equation of access to all aspects of
the university; the liberty from the oppression on campus; the free speech to
debate issues. Then I will apply the definition given by Matsuda to evaluate
the first case.
The white students in
first case affronted a small group of black women who really did something in
public , regardless of others' feelings. However, is it really the hate speech?
did he actually harm those women psychologically? did he limit the opportunities
of those people of color to access to the campus? did he hamper the freedom
debate? and what about the event that the black destroy all the newspaper just
because of their emotion? I will cope with all of these questions one by one.
First of all, as we know,
those women actually create an terrible influence in public that they disturbed
other students to study, ignoring others' feelings and admonishment. From this
white student's perspective, it is, to some extent, rational for him to alarm
those self-centered black women, even if his method to handle the problem is a
bit extreme. Also, an important point I have to mention is that he didn't
actually use some discriminating expression. So we can say that the rude
expression of this white student surely did psychological harm for those women ,
but we cannot classify the rude expression into the discrimination.
Secondly, this white
student's behavior impede the freedom speech, whatever whether the
discriminating expression or not. The verbal abuse, such as this white
student's behavior, alleviate people's desire to express their opinions in
rational ways but rather increase their desire to solve the problems in means
of physical assault.
Conclusion from analysis
above, we have to confess the verbal expression of the white student is the
hate speech in fact. But what about another event which occurred at the same
time----people of color expressed their dissent opinion also using the rudely
method. So both of these two events has to be limited.
The university, as the
special institution which stand for many meaningful things, such as the pursuit
of knowledge, should shoulder the responsibility to educate students in the
scientific ways but not just restrict and punish students' behaviors. This is
what the university should do.

This part are talking
about media.first they give us a example about printing this is a kind of way
about media. Then they talk about how does media useing to transmit massage.
You can pass massage any
where you want. You can pass in library, restaurant, mall also you can pass on
internet. In the twenty-first-century delivery massage is very easy.
For this I think the
internet was more convenience.Because you can get in very where you want.Like
library you must be go there and if you want different exchange you must go to
different place but internet you don't need this.
If you want to talk with
your middle school and primary school classment if you are in place you have to
go to two place to meet them bue if you have internet you can just send the
massage ti everyone.
There is also the way that
people pass the knowledge. On this way knowledge was be passed very fast. Like
you can go to library or internet to check everything you wangt to help you .
In there ,they have everything you want.
If you want write
something about a panda.you don't know about panda only one thing that you can
do is going to web to check about panda or going to the library to check about
them.
that is the way they pass
massage.

In the book, the writer wrote about what the technology changed on our life and study, there are both positive and negative opinions in the article about the new media's influence. There are several paragraph mentioned me the internet blocked the face-to-face social connection between people. At home his wife have to start their work after she finished all the online work. The writer himself is also afraid of the plenty of e-mail everyday.
I agree on the writer's opinion, the new media made our life better, but it also separate people by individuals. Our face-to-face connections are decreasing. The attention we put on our real life is much more less, we want to finish the online business before to start a new day, and the social net work is transfer from off line to online. We should practice our attention control, make sure that when we are searching online, we should task of finding the information you need at the moment you need it, learning what we need at the moment we need it, learning what we need to learn and forgetting what we don't need, and most important, learning how to filter out the bad info. (Page15)So that we can save more time on the computer and turn our face to our real life at the moment.

The author of this book is trying to teach the reader how to use internet mindfully so that you can benefit from it. what intrigued me most what that he said for using internet mindfully people should not use the internet for finding their interests, they have to use it for their needs. He also mentions that you can not be successful with knowing different skills, and you have to know how to use them in today's world with communication, collaboration, participation and network and he believes that without these people can drown themselves "in torrents of misinformation, disinformation, advertisement, spam, porn, noise, and trivia".

Homework 6 Mr.Zhang
How does Delpit respond to Gee? Who do you agree with and why?
Since we have read about the definitions of Literacy given by Gee and discussed about the understanding of Literacy before, what were demonstrated by Delpit in the passage appeared to be a very good critical thinking of Gee's opinion. And as the same as us, the writer Delpit first agreed with Gee's identification of Discourses. But after further thinking of First Discourses and Second Discourses ( given from School and Home), Delpit found that what Gee demonstrated that the two different statuses--socially dominant and some nondominant were seemed different from his and his colleagues' experience who helped to educate the poor children and children of color.
Next, he gives out what the different points: 1. Delpit thought Gee had overly estimated the difficulty if man was 'not been born into Dominant Discourses and wanted to understand it. 2.He thought that Gee had also over demonstrated the trouble and conflicts when ' attempting to acquire another Discourses' (P 266). Followed with the negative effects which Gee's idea would brought, Delpit demonstrated those 'successful' African American should also acquire another Discourse instead of his own one.
According to my point of view, I would definitely agree with what Gee said. As I came to the U.S, I've made over 200 friends but most of them are Chinese. I can even count my American friends' number with my fingers. The reason of this is obvious: difference in speaking, which should be concluded to Gee's 'Second Discourses'. I tried quite hard to communicate with them, just similar as Delpits' example, but the relationship between me and my American friends was just saying Hello to each other. Although Delpit did believe this could be overcame, for me, I think, it should be an impossible mission--I have to do that all the time, but no final answer.

What part of Rheingold’s argument
intrigues you? Why?
The experience of the author that to
teach her students in means of the internet system instead of the traditional
methods intrigues me greatly. Unlike the face-to face communication, using the
network to teach students, that students will be always-and -everywhere with
the computer instead of put more effort on the professor himself, will be
benefit of cultivate students to be proficient at using the internet system
intelligently. There are the advantages and the negative effects at the same
time. Learning to select the inflow of information we receive is a tough
challenge for students that we should know ourselves very well including
knowing what the information we need actually and how long we should spend on
it. Students who can master to use the internet will gain countless benefit
that from personal aspect that they will broaden their network and impersonal
aspect that the effort of every individual participating to the internet will be
combined to the exceptional energy for the society. On the contrary, the
students who cannot let themselves under control will lose themselves through
the internet channel. So practicing ourselves to exert the control to be away
from the temptation, namely useless or unhealthy information, is the key to master the internet.
From my perspective, refusing to
develop the internet is not a good method for us to be successful in this twenty-first
century. The computer will not only enhance the efficiency to finish the assignments,
but also share the knowledge and intelligence with each other. In another
aspect, the flow of information will distract us that the doing multitask is
not a good habit for the majority, including me, because we are not capable of
pay most of our attention on the meaningful things. For an instance, when I
have concentrated on the assignment for a long time, I will eager to go the Face
book to relax myself. In fact, I will be out of control when I encounter so
many engaged stuffs. In this case, the useless information lead me to lose
myself.
The author point out one of the most
crucial problem for the majority and provide us an excellent way to avoid this
problem that we should ask ourselves what we really want before we make the
decision to use any media. This is the part of the article I like best.
